In the autumn of 2020 we launched our technology with leading Japanese homewares retailer MUJI.

The deployment began in their Kings Road store in London followed by a roll out across their entire UK store estate in late October 2020.

We activated the MishiPay iOS and Android native apps alongside our web app that can be used straight from the user’s browser, without the need to download the app. We also integrated with the retailer’s backend systems, including their product catalogue and multiple promotion combinations. This enabled shoppers to scan the barcodes of the items inside the store and see promotions in real time in their in-app basket, before checking out using a wide range of payment methods. We also integrated flows for age verification. The entire integration was completed in just 6 weeks.

FACILITATING STORE EFFICIENCY

MishiPay has been carefully designed to help brick and mortar stores to operate at optimal efficiency. By enabling shoppers to use their own mobile device for their entire shopping journey, our technology liberates store staff from the checkout so that they can add value in other areas of the store instead of simply processing transactions behind the cashier’s desk. With MishiPay in play, MUJI store teams can fully focus on improving and optimizing the store environment and ensuring they deliver the best experience for consumers instead of simply waiting to process their payment at the end of their visit.

By activating the shopper’s own device as a ‘pocket checkout’, MUJI stores are no longer limited by the number of payment terminals they offer and can therefore unlock unlimited transaction capacity. This in turn reduces the retailer’s investment in checkout hardware and its associated licensing and maintenance whilst ensuring that shoppers are no longer negatively impacted by having to waste time waiting in a line to pay at a conventional checkout.

INCREASING SALES

In a conventional store experience, a shopper browses and selects their chosen items before proceeding to the checkout area where their items and payments are processed. In this scenario, shoppers buying multiple items are often not aware of the total amount they are spending until their items are processed through the checkout and their total spend is signaled on the till display.

MishiPay flips this paradigm: our technology keeps the MUJI shopper fully informed about their total spend as they shop, updating them as they add or remove items from their basket. In real-time, the shopper is informed about any available promotions available on items they scan and their savings are automatically applied as these promotions are triggered. Instead of understanding the savings they have made at the end of their journey, MishiPay tells them whilst they are still immersed in browsing the store. This key transformation of the conventional in-store experience has translated into tangible sales increases for MUJI.
